“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
Just as with Nicodemus the woman fails to see the metaphor and takes things literally. She also harks back to Jacob. The message of out with the old and in with the new has not got through to her.
We have become so familiar with the inner meanings of Jesus' sayings that we forget how puzzling his teaching was to his hearers. Hearing they never hear.
