He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
In his encounter with this woman Jesus now puts his finger on the nub of her problem. She had been gathering water by herself, not with the other women of the village. Why? Because she had been ostracized by the other villagers for her sexual behavior. Of these 5 husbands, how many had she stolen from other women?
All have sinned and fall short. When we approach the Master have we confessed our sins or do we hope to brazen it out thinking we can keep things from God?
This is the second example of Jesus' omniscience; the first was more oblique with Nicodemus, but here is it more overt.
