John 7:45-46. Restraining evil

Finally, the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.

It is so easy to fall under the spell of Jesus; his words are winsome. The question is how will his words affect our lives. CS Lewis tells us that a belief only means something when it starts to cost. Restraining us from doing evil is one thing, but prompting us to do good is another.

These Temple Guards were restrained from arresting Jesus, but they were not going to give up their lucrative jobs and follow him.

Jesus asks those who believe in him to take up their cross and follow him. This isn't just a case of it might be costly; it will be costly.
