It is with great sadness that we announce that Terry peacefully passed away shortly before 1.00 AM on Sunday 8th January 2012.
The family wish to thank everybody for their prayers and kind messages sent over the period of Terry’s illness.
Further details of the thanksgiving service will be posted on this blog in the near future.
Terry meant so much to the CLL community as he no doubt did to his friends and family that no words can adequately express our grief nor measure the void that his passing will leave.

We were so fortunate to have Dr Hamblin as our CLL expert consultant for many years. His spirit of generosity in sharing his knowledge and experience was truly amazing. I watched the sunset tonight after reading of Dr Hamblin's passing. My heart was heavy and tears flowed freely. I cried for his family and for our Gentle Giant of the CLL Community and the loss of all that he did to help us and the life he dedicated to curing this disease.
ReplyDeleteThen I realized that Dr Hamblin was viewing his first sunset from Heaven with His Father. My heart quieted and I smiled. He discipled all of us with spiritual teachings. It was obvious how he loved His Lord and Savior.
I have mentioned how on a couple of occasions, Dr Hamblin offered me advice that literally saved my life. My family and I are forever indebted to him. Our oldest daughter was planning a trip to the UK this year to thank Dr Hamblin in person on behalf of my family and me. That was not meant to be, so all that I can offer are my prayers, condolences and appreciation to his beloved family. May each of you rest in the assurance that Dr Hamblin has eternal life.

ReplyDeleteGreat physicians are rare enough, but, what really impressed me about Terry, was, that he was that rare person - one who really lived what he preached - a true Christian. I certainly did not agree with everything that he wrote, far from it, that would be very boring, but he was always scrupulously honest and tried to be fair.

While a daily observer of the CLL site and Terry's blog, I have not before commented - just Watched - Waited -Wondered what indeed was instore;realizing that I had this disease some years before diagnosis.

I am very sad to learn that Dr.Hamblin has passed away. When I was diagnosed with CLL almost 4 years ago at 47, I was scared and realized that not even all doctors knew much about this illness. Then I found his blog and it was a double blessing, because I found answers to so many questions about CLL and because I was getting a lot of spiritual support from this wonderful man of faith through his writings on Christianity. He would always answer a post or an email. He meant so much to all of us with CLL. Please accept my deepest condolences, it is hard to lose a loved one. We lost him but heaven gained one more precious soul, may he rest in peace.

Meeting Terry for the first and only time in person was in the Spring of 2007 at the Canadian CLL Conference where he immediately impressed me with his humanity and knowledge. From that time he has helped guide me on my CLL journey.
ReplyDeleteI left early Sunday morning for Columbus OH on my monthly monitoring with the PCI Clinical Trial thinking Professor Hamblin was not in as grave health as earlier hospice reports indicated. Firing up my computer after returning last night was therefore a disheartening shock. While we all hoped and prayed for a miracle; gone is Terry's suffering and unbound by earthly tethers, his soul is free to roam.
Terry's helping my understanding of the discordance in my CLL, his capacity for patience in answering my numerous questions and his mentoring encouragement when I became a Reviewer of blood cancer research proposals for the Defense Dept. will never be forgotten. I am in the process of finalizing critiques on a new set of some exciting proposals for which any value of my input, I owe much to Terry's prodigious and generous efforts in keeping us informed and learning how to think about the complexities of CLL and by extension other blood cancers. I am dedicating my best efforts to his memory that we may prevail and achieve the freedom from cancer he so dedicated his intelligence and caring to make real.

I only met Prof. Hamblin once, in Bournemouth, in September 2007. However I have corresponded with him on a number of occasions about CLL.
ReplyDeleteI was always surprised that if I had a personal CLL worry I would usually get a response within a few hours and I live at the other side of the world!
When I look at the list above of just a fraction of the many people he has helped one wonders how it was humanly possible.
The only certainty of life is death but what we do with that life is what counts. Prof. Hamblin spent a large fraction of his life helping others, especially in the CLL community. We are all extremely grateful. His departure is a terrible loss.
I would like to express my deepest sympathies to his family.

I was shocked and saddened by the news of Terry's passing. Some people are given to the world by God to spread hope, love and understanding to those who will listen. I listened to Terry and found great comfort in his explanations,so free of jargon, which helped me to better understand my illness. Now with his passing I fear that the silence will be deafening.

I will miss Terry. He enabled my partner to survive CLL for almost six years. He was a fine poet who wrote as though Thomas Hardy and Charlotte Mew were the new thing in the language. If the family, to whom I send my condolences, wish to publish his verse, I'm at timmurphyis@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOnly a genius can explain something complicated in very simple words, undestandable to everyone. Dr.Terry was that genius. He was also a humble, faithful servant of God. RIP

I have left my grief in words at several different sites. Sites where Dr. Hamblin was well known and loved. It is so very hard to have to keep realizing that he is gone. My heart flies to his family and loved ones. There was a great one in your midst, as I am sure you all knew.

ReplyDeleteTerry Hamblin was a selfless giant and we are all grateful that he gave so much and asked for so little back. Clichés are too ealily used at times like this but I think that saying that the world has lost a great mind doesn't even go far enough.

As a CML carrier, I stumbled into Terry's blog two year ago. I kept coming back for his Christian insights and unflagging confidence in Christ as his life moved steadily toward eternity. I pray he will enjoy some great conversations with CS Lewis, and hope I can listen in when I get to cross over the Jordan to find rest, as I know Terry has. What words can convey the sorrow of loss to those he touched?

ReplyDeleteDear Doc, the day that i knew i would rue has come...so much we could connect upon and share and argue from opposite sides of the globe; now i can only imagine what your opinion / repartee would be (i have learned pretty much what you think like thanks to your frankness in all things human, professional and personal) - most of all i think of your mother, who taught you the 3 R's by age 3, as my mum did...i read about all your visits & recollections of childhood rhymes with her - she has the same gift of memory / intellect as you.
