John 7:41-2. Interpretaions of prophesy

Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”

Prophesy is all very well, but interpretation tends to work retrospectively. Like the man who predicted the world's end incorrectly three times this month, the Jews had it wrong about the Messiah and were unaware of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem.

We are fine with the plain text of Scripture, but with the difficult prophetic passages we should recognize that the commentaries often have a dozen different possible interpretations.
