John 6:26: careful what you wish for.

Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

So many people seek Jesus for what they can get out of him. They are like the older brother of the prodigal son parable. He never loved his father for his own sake, but because in his own mind he had made a bargain with him: obey the Father now and one day all this will be yours. It is like the Elizabeth Eliot parable that I related in the last posting - are you carrying the stone for you or for me?

What do we want to get from God? Eternal life? Escape from hell? A blissful afterlife?

Do we want to be in his presence and enjoy him forever? Better get to know him now or you may find that you don't like him. That it's not what you really want. Can't imagine that that would be so, but be careful what you wish for. You might need to change before you commit to this. Remember, eternal life starts now.
