Galatians 5:22 ...kindness...

The fruit of the Spirit is …kindness…

Kindness is a quality we see all too little of. In our bluff and efficient world kindness often goes out the window. It goes well alongside patience because kindness often takes a moment longer. But it is only a moment longer. Imagine the difference made by a doctor’s receptionist who instead of hurrying on to the “Next!” takes the time to treat each patient as an individual. Many of Jesus’ instructions involve kindness. Going the extra mile, offering your cloak as well, and turning the other cheek, are all examples. Can you think of an occasion when you were brusque when you should have been kind?

Jesus showed us kindness in that he did not condemn us despite our rebellion; instead he went the extra mile for us, gave us another chance and in effect turned the other cheek. When he was attacked and humiliated he did not react by condemnation but by grace. Kindness has an element of this. It means that when you are in a position of superiority you don’t take advantage of it, but instead humble yourself and act like a slave for the benefit of your adversary.
